About the department
Cardiology looks after the heart and blood vessels — chest pain, heart attacks, high blood pressure, heart failure, irregular heartbeat and heart valve disease.
Heart disease is increasingly common at younger ages, especially in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking or a family history. Regular check-ups and early tests can find a problem before it becomes a heart attack.
The hospital has a Cath Lab, 2D Echo, Color Doppler and an ICU, so chest pain can be assessed quickly and treated in the same hospital. Chest pain lasting more than a few minutes, especially with sweating or breathlessness, is an emergency — come to the hospital immediately.
When to see a doctor
- Chest pain, pressure or tightness (emergency if it lasts)
- Breathlessness while walking or lying down
- Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
- Fainting, dizziness or blackouts
- Swelling of the feet or ankles
- High blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- A family history of heart disease at a young age
In an emergency, do not wait for an appointment — the emergency department is open 24 hours.
