About the department
The General Surgery & Laparoscopy department treats conditions of the abdomen, skin and soft tissues that need an operation — gallstones, hernia, appendicitis, piles, fissure, fistula and lumps — with both open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
In laparoscopic surgery the surgeon works through 2–4 small cuts of about 5–10 mm, using a thin camera (laparoscope) and fine instruments while watching a screen. Compared with a large open cut, most patients have less pain, less blood loss, smaller scars, a shorter hospital stay and return to normal work sooner.
Not every patient or condition is suitable for keyhole surgery. Your surgeon will examine you, review your scans and explain whether laparoscopic or open surgery is safer for you, what the operation involves and what recovery to expect.
When to see a doctor
- A swelling in the groin, near the navel or over an old operation scar
- Pain in the upper right abdomen after meals, or gallstones on ultrasound
- Pain in the lower right abdomen (emergency if severe, with fever or vomiting)
- Bleeding, pain or a swelling while passing stool
- A lump anywhere on the body that is growing
- An abscess, boil or wound that is not healing

Common questions
What is laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery?
It is an operation done through 2–4 small cuts using a thin camera and fine instruments, instead of one large cut. Most patients have less pain, smaller scars, a shorter hospital stay and a faster return to work.
Is laparoscopic surgery suitable for everyone?
Not always. It depends on your condition, previous operations and overall health. Your surgeon will examine you and your reports and advise whether keyhole or open surgery is safer for you.
How long will I stay in hospital after laparoscopic surgery?
Many patients go home within 1–2 days after laparoscopic gallbladder, hernia or appendix surgery. Your surgeon will tell you what to expect for your operation.
Does every hernia need surgery?
A hernia does not go away on its own and usually needs surgery. See a surgeon early — and come to the emergency department immediately if the swelling becomes painful, hard or cannot be pushed back.
Should gallstones be removed if they cause pain?
Gallstones that cause pain, infection or jaundice are usually treated by removing the gallbladder, most often by laparoscopic surgery. Your surgeon will advise based on your ultrasound and symptoms.
