About the department
Urology treats problems of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and prostate, and the male reproductive organs — including kidney stones, prostate enlargement, urine infections, blood in urine and difficulty passing urine.
Kidney stones are common in our hot, dry region, especially when people drink too little water. Most small stones pass with medicines and plenty of fluids; larger stones may need a procedure.
Prostate enlargement is common in men over 50 and causes a weak stream and frequent urination at night. Severe pain in the side or back with vomiting, or being unable to pass urine, needs urgent care.
When to see a doctor
- Severe pain in the side, back or lower abdomen
- Burning, frequent or urgent urination
- Blood in urine
- Weak stream, dribbling or difficulty passing urine
- Unable to pass urine at all (emergency)
- Getting up many times at night to pass urine
- Swelling or pain in the scrotum
In an emergency, do not wait for an appointment — the emergency department is open 24 hours.

Common questions
What are the signs of a kidney stone?
Severe pain in the side or back that may spread to the groin, often with vomiting, burning urine or blood in the urine. Come to the emergency department if the pain is severe.
Do all kidney stones need surgery?
No. Many small stones pass on their own with medicines and plenty of water. Larger stones, or stones causing blockage or infection, may need a procedure.
How can I prevent kidney stones?
Drink enough water to pass clear urine — usually 2.5–3 litres a day, more in summer — and reduce salt. Your doctor may give diet advice based on the type of stone.
When should men get their prostate checked?
See a doctor for a weak urine stream, passing urine often at night, or a feeling that the bladder is not empty — especially after 50.
